Netflix & Needlepoint 6.0

Since I started Lycette and began working from home I have gained weight. And no, I’m not whining about 5 lbs or even 10 lbs, I am talking closer to 20 lbs! You may ponder how that could have happened without me noticing at the 10 or maybe 15 lb mark? Well combine a natural love of food, a penchant for emotional eating, and a personal style that mirrors Mrs. Roper and suddenly it’s ten months later and my jeans won’t zip without a generous greasing of crisco. In an effort to lose weight I have been eating vegan and not drinking. In other words I am a barrel of fun, and a hostesses’ worst nightmare. However, I still have one outlet for my sugarplum dreams and that is the fabulous “The Great British Bake Off.”

the great british bake off

“The Great British Bake Off” is, you guessed it, a British baking competition show available on Netflix! Each season begins with a plethora of amateur bakers who compete to win the approval of judges Mary Berry and Paul Hollywood. On each episode contestants must bake in three different challenges- The Signature Challenge, The Technical Challenge, and the Showstopper Challenge. Contestants bake everything from traditional British confections like crumpets to Italian staples such as breadsticks to a good ‘ole fashioned lemon meringue pie.

Paul Hollywood and Mary Berry. Can you even with those names? They were made for Television

What makes the show ideal for a Netflix & Needlepoint session is the relaxed atmosphere and the idyllic location. Each episode takes place in a billowy white tent set in an English field, and the general mood of the show is a sugar dusting of anxiety. Sure the contestants are nervous, but in true British stoicism they rarely show it. In addition, the shows’ hosts Mel Giedroyc and Sue Perkins pepper the show with innuendos. In fact the whole show is sprinkled with innuendos, which makes the baking banter enjoyable for a cheeky lass such as myself. Watch the hilarious clip below where Hugh Jackman and Billy Crystal read actual dialogue from the show…

I highly recommend “The Great British Bakeoff” for your next Netflix & Needlepoint session. Please let me know what you think, and as always please leave recommendations for your favorite shows!

Lycette’s own “Bugger” canvas goes smashingly well with a “The Great British Bake Off” Netflix & Needlepoint session.

  6. That video is a scream! Also watch Rosemary and Thyme, two England landscape designers who solve crimes. The locations are stunning and it has that comfy Jessica Fletcher/Miss Marple feel.
